Can I drive a unipolar stepper motor by a bipolar stepper motor driver?

Unipolar with 6 lead wires or 8 lead wires can be driven by the bipolar stepper motor driver, but you can't drive a 4 lead wires bipolar stepper motor with a unipolar stepper motor driver.

UIrobot stepper motor driver are two phases hybrid bipolar stepper motor driver. It’s compatible with Mach3 software.

 

Bipolar constant current microsteppingThis is an improved version of the basic full- and half- stepping bipolar constant-current driver. Here, the winding currents form a sine/cosine pair. This greatly improves lowfrequency stepping by eliminating overshot movements, ringing, and resonances. Performance at medium and high-stepping rates are close to that of full- and half-stepping.

 

This driver uses the same power stage as the bipolar constant-current driver, but extra electronics for setting the sine/cosine current levels are used. Microstepping can be used with different microstep lengths. A shorter step length than 1⁄32 of a fullstep normally does not make any further improvement in the motor’s motion. With most microstepping controllers, is it also possible to runthe normal full- and half-step modes.

 

Microstepping can also increase motor resolution and step accuracy.
